Support at Home

Getting help at home doesn’t mean losing your independence - it helps you keep it, your way.

Support at Home (1)

You can choose and pay privately for the home care services that suit your needs.

However, from 1 November 2025, the Australian Government introduced Support at Home - a new program of funding to help older people get the care they need at home. It replaces Home Care Packages.

Accent Home Care is an approved provider of the Support at Home program, and we are here to guide you every step of the way so you can feel confident, cared for, and in control of your care.

What you need to know about the Support at Home program

Under Support at Home, two types of care funding are available, ongoing and short term.
Ongoing Care Funding Accent Home Care

Ongoing Care Funding

Regular funding is provided each quarter to help you get the help you need to thrive at home.

Short Term Care Funding Accent Home Care

Short Term Care Funding

Short-term funding will help you recover after illness or hospital stay, support you at home in your final months, and pay for home modifications and assistive equipment

"Since being with Accent Home Care I have had excellent results. Communication is so important and Accent Care go above and beyond to make sure my needs are met."

Ongoing Care Funding

If you’re approved for ongoing Support at Home funding, you’ll receive a classification from 1 to 8 - with 1 for lower care needs and 8 for higher care needs.
Ongoing Support at Home funding is grouped into three levels of care classifications.

Accent Home Care Clinical Care

Clinical Care

Clinical care funding covers qualified nursing and allied health services - helping you stay healthy, recover, and live independently at home with professional, compassionate support.

Accent Home Care Independence Services (2)

Independence

Independence support funding helps you with daily activities, personal care, social connection, respite, and transport - so you can stay confident, independent, and supported at home.

Accent Home Care Everyday Living (1)

Everyday Living

Everyday living funding covers help with cleaning, laundry, shopping, gardening, and meal preparation - keeping your home comfortable and your life easier at home.

Am I eligible for Support at Home?

You can access any home care services you need and pay for them privately.  However, if you choose, the Australian Government, through My Aged Care, will assess your eligibility for Support at Home funding.  My Aged Care is a free government service that organises your assessment for home care, works out how much funding you can get, and lets you know if there are any costs you may need to pay.

To be eligible for an assessment you need to be:

  • Aged 65 or over
  • An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged 50 or over
  • Aged 50 or over who is at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness

Click "Arrange Your Free Consultation" and we will help you understand your options, get the best funding for your needs, and guide you through getting ready for your aged care assessment.

Restorative Care

Restorative Care funding provides short-term, focused support - including allied health and clinical services - to help you recover, regain confidence to stay independent at home.

End of Life Pathway

End of Life Pathway

End-of-Life Care funding provides gentle, respectful in-home support for people wishing to remain at home - focusing on dignity, comfort, and personal wishes through coordinated nursing and allied health care.

Will I have to contribute to my Support at Home care?

If you’re eligible for the Support at Home program, the Australian Government will fund some or most of your services. You may still need to pay a co-contribution - depending on your income and the services you choose - as determined by your Service Australia assessment. What you pay depends on:

  • The type of service:
    • There is no cost for clinical care (e.g., nursing, physio).

    • There may be moderate cost for independence supports (e.g., personal care, equipment, home mods).

    • There could be a higher cost for everyday living help (e.g., cleaning, gardening).

  • Your financial situation - the government will look at your age pension means test to decide how much you may need to pay, and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders will pay lower contributions than other self-funded retirees.

What does this mean for my current Home Care Package?

If you are currently receiving a Home Care Package, you will automatically be moved to the new Support at Home on 1st November 2025.

Here's what you need to know:

  • You'll keep receiving the same services and care you currently receive, although there may be some small adjustments to fit the new categories.
  • Under the new system, your care plan will list everything you will receive along with a new budget that covers three months of care. You will no longer be able to save up your funds that are unused.
  • There are brand new services available through Support at Home, including music therapy, digital support, art therapy and much more.
  • Your Care Advisor will still provide you the same level of care and will have a new title as your Care Partner.

Benefits of Support at Home

Here are some of the benefits of the Support at Home program compared to Home Care Packages.

Care partner support
All participants have a dedicated Care Partner to support them.

Fairer costs
You do not pay for clinical services, but may need to pay towards services like cleaning or gardening.

Shorter wait times
The goal is to start your care within 3 months of being approved.

Upfront Funding
For things like walking aids or rails in the shower.

More support when you need it
A new Restorative Care Pathway with support for 12 weeks.

End-of-life support
To help you stay at home and pass away with dignity.

We’ll help you prepare for your assessment, answer any questions, and guide you on what to do next.

Navigating home care can be frustrating.  We’re experts in aged care and here to help you get the best support possible.

  • To get started - you request an assessment by calling My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or apply online by clicking here

To get subsidised help at home, someone from the government will visit you. This person is called an assessor. They’ll talk with you about your health, how you're coping at home, and what support you might need.

Together with your assessor, you’ll make a support plan. This is a simple summary of your needs, goals, and the kind of services and funding you can get to help you stay living at home.

Even though providers like Accent Home Care are approved to give services, we are not involved in this assessment. It is done independently by the government.

If you have questions, need advice, or aren't sure where to start, we're here to help. At Accent Home Care, we're experts in home care and can guide you through the process

  • After your assessment, you'll get a letter with your support plan. This will include:

    • What kind of help you need and your goals

    • How much funding you’ll get every 3 months

    • Any extra short-term support you might need, like equipment, home changes, health services or end-of-life care.

  • One of the major changes between the new Support at Home program and the current Home Care Packages is the wait time – the government now aims to reduce it to just 3 months.

While you're waiting for your funding to be assigned, you can still get the help you need by arranging and paying for services privately through us.

Once your funding is ready, you’ll be able to start receiving government-subsidised support at home.

  • Once your funding is assigned, you will share your support plan with us, and start receiving the help you need at home.
  • Everyone supported by Support at Home and Accent Home Care is matched with a dedicated Care Partner. Care Partners are dedicated professionals who are committed to providing personalised and reliable care tailored to your needs.

They guide you through every step of your care journey, offering expertise and meaningful insights into the care available that brings lasting benefits, especially if you are new to Aged Care and do not understand the system well.

Your Care Partner is here to make things easier to understand and manage. They’ll help you feel confident, supported and relaxed, giving you a sense of hope, safety and energy so you can enjoy life to the fullest.

Plus, many of our Care Partners speak other languages in addition to English, ensuring you can communicate comfortably and feel confident that your needs will be understood.
